Customer Acquisition Strategies

Oldie But Goodie

Referral programs are not new and are often neglected. They lack the novelty of a new ad platform or the adrenaline of a viral campaign, but the data is difficult to argue with. Over 89% of consumers trust word-of-mouth referrals more than any form of advertising. Organizations with formal referral programs see meaningfully lower customer acquisition costs.

Referrals should be treated as a marketing channel and managed as such. Incentives get the lion’s share of attention for referral programs, but heavy consideration should be given to the timing. Asking at the moment of peak delight – immediately after a successful purchase, positive support interaction that solved a problem, or at a loyalty milestone – produces dramatically better results than less personalized timing considerations.

Hiding in the Background

Dark Social is the channel that we as marketers cannot measure. As much as 80% of content sharing happens through private channels – texts, DMs, group chats, forwarded emails – that never show up in analytics. A friend sending your link to a colleague, a founder dropping your product into a Slack group, or a happy customer screenshotting your IG post for a WhatsApp thread – none of this is trackable, but it all drives revenue.

Instead of measuring dark social it’s best to fuel it. Emotionally shareable content – things that make people feel seen, laugh, or want to prove a point to their friends – travels through private channels much more frequently than uninspired, stifled brand collateral. Building for belonging and collaborating with micro-influencers who have genuine trust in niche circles all increase the likelihood that people will bring others into the fold.

On the Horizon: The AI Intermediary

Artificial Intelligence agents are increasingly mediating discovery and consideration before a customer ever reaches your website. This means the first touchpoint with your brand may now be an AI summary that either includes you or not – it’s a new segment for your SEO strategy.

The brands that will win acquisition in this environment are the ones that make their product information so precise, structured and verifiable that AI systems can confidently recommend them – and make the human experience of arriving at their site so distinct and trustworthy that the customer stays.
